Oklahoma City Marathon Recap
2011 Oklahoma City Marathon
As I sit here this early Saturday morning, thinking about
tomorrow’s Dallas White Rock Marathon, I realized that I needed to recap OKC
from earlier this year. This will be short and sweet, and as of right now
(12/3/11), tomorrow’s conditions look eerily similar to what I endured in
Oklahoma a few months back. Here goes.
Three words will summarize this marathon:
1. Rain
2. Wet
3. Cold
1. Rain
2. Wet
3. Cold
As the months since the marathon have passed, my sarcasm and
humor in recapping the race seem to wane, much like my mile times late in the
race.
The rain started around 7 a.m. They pushed the start time
back to 7:30 thinking it would subside, but all that did was allow more rain to
accumulate on the course. Started at 7:30 a.m. with a light but steady rain. As
the miles increased, so did the rain. Periods of hard rain, peels of thunder
towards mile 18. Puddles to avoid. Soaked to the bone. More annoying than
anything, we got used to it and managed to fight through.
I felt pretty good for most of the race, and did not start
my walking until my normal mile 20. Even then, I was able to fight through and
walk/run through the last 6 miles.
As I came across the finish line, the hail began. Thankfully
I was able to duck under a tent and avoid being pelted. Didn’t last long, and I
was able to hobble to my parked car about a mile away. Once in the car, soaked
and tired, I attempted to strip out of wet clothes and change into dry
ones. Car running, heater blowing, it
took at least 30 minutes for me to stop shivering and start to warm up. It was
a feeling I have never experienced before.
I survived my first cold, rainy marathon. And now, tomorrow’s Dallas White Rock
Marathon is shaping up very similar, only colder. Chelsea has given me her
blessing to run, despite being only 3 days away from giving birth to Baby
Fariss #2.
First goal is to survive. Second goal is to get home as
quickly as possible.
